As a result of years of writing, filing complaints and lawsuits, calling, protesting and other forms of agitation and advocacy, the Department of Justice has opened up an investigation into the management of the Trousdale Turner Corrections Facility operated by CoreCivic. Finally, all of our hard work and persistence has paid off!
But our work doesn't stop here. Now that we have their attention, we need to make the most of it. We need to make sure that our stories and the stories of our loved ones are heard. We need to ensure that the Department of Justice knows that the issues at Trousdale are not confined to that facility but are present at all CoreCivic managed facilities in Tennessee.
The Department of Justice has set up a way for the community to contact them about this investigation. And we should. We should let them know that:
We have a vested interest in the outcome of this investigation. We have been incarcerated there, we have loved ones who have been incarcerated there and we live in communities that have been negatively impacted by CoreCivic's mismanagement of the facility.
The problems at Trousdale are not an anomaly. These issues are present in every facility operated by CoreCivic in Tennessee and the investigation should be widened to include those facilities.
The issues at Trousdale are not because of a few rogue "bad apples" at the bottom of the barrel. The problems are a manifestation of a culture of corruption and a business model that prioritizes profits over the well being of people. Making a few arrests of low level people will not resolve the issue.
Please call the Department of Justice at (888) 392-7031 or send emails to community.trousdaleturner@usdoj.gov. And while you are reaching out, please contact Bill Lee at (615) 741-2001 and https://www.tn.gov/governor/contact-us/share-opinion.html. He has doubled down on his support for CoreCivic and needs to be called out on that. No politician should feel comfortable supporting CoreCivic's inhumanity.
It is so easy to feel discouraged and feel like we are shouting in a closed and locked room where no one hears us. However, this reminds us that when we unite our voices, we can make a difference.
